Campion Earkhert â handpicked by God, as were all ministers of the Catholic faith â had received the calling at the age of fourteen, and, after graduating high school, had gone on to attend New York Cityâs prominent St. Johnâs University, where heâd earned a Bachelor of Science degree while dabbling extensively in the liberal arts. After his four years there, the next procedural step was enrollment at St. Vladimirâs Orthodox Theological Seminary in Crestwood, New York, where he began his three-year quest for his Master of Divinity degree. Of course, he would never have been allowed to progress so far in life if anyone had seen him, at the tender age of seven, pushing that little girl in front of the city bus; nor if anyone had been able to prove that he had been the one, in his first year of junior high, to stab one of his classmates to death with a screwdriver; nor if he had been implicated in the savage beating of a homeless man a year later; nor if he had been seen slipping arsenic into the punchbowl at his senior prom.
The change in his environment upon his admission into college seemed to suppress and even pacify Earkhertâs natural psychosis, however, and his dark side remained buried for years, even for the better part of his junior year at St. Vladimirâs, with its eleven acres of lush, green surroundings, beautiful buildings, and lively, wholesome, community-oriented campus lifestyle. For his first seven months at the seminary, Earkhert was the very embodiment of what a priest-in-training should be, attending devotedly to his studies and participating enthusiastically in chapel and choir activities. Then, on an unusually hot and humid night in late April, he and a fellow student became involved in a bitter, protracted argument, and the following morning a body was found in the basement of the campusâ chapel.
There was no holding Earkhertâs bloodlust after that. The beast lying dormant inside of him had tasted its first kill in half a decade and it craved more. St. Vladimirâs quickly became home to a masked fiend whom the media dubbed âThe Praying Mantisâ, and before the academic year was out, nine more seminarians had succumbed to his wicked reign of unholy terror, including the girl who had been drowned in the private lake on the campusâ northwest property line, the young child of a married couple who had been hanged by his neck from one of the swingsets, the two victims of hideous disembowelment, the four students who had inhaled anthrax from the venerable pages of the chapel Bible, and the professor who had been found crucified upon the trunk of a giant oak. Naturally, this sort of behavior brought about an immense conflict within the aspiring priest, so, out of the necessity to adapt came Earkhertâs twisted realization of his holy mission to serve the Lord through the consistent extermination of âsinnersâ; a label which he affixed to every living person but himself.
The seminary itself saw
